Shillong: The Health Experts Committee of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Meghalaya, convened on Tuesday under the chairmanship of the Principal Secretary to address concerns regarding Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), as highlighted by various news outlets. The meeting focused on assessing the current threat level and reviewing the preparedness of the state health machinery to respond effectively.
During the discussion, officials clarified that HMPV is not a newly discovered virus. It has been circulating for many years and was first identified in 2001. In December 2024, only nine cases of HMPV were confirmed across India out of 714 suspected cases, with no fatalities reported.
“HMPV causes mild respiratory symptoms similar to the flu, such as fever, cough, sore throat, and runny nose. There have been no deaths associated with the virus,” stated health officials. They emphasized that current trends align with seasonal patterns and do not indicate any unusual or alarming developments.
To minimize the risk of respiratory infections, the department urged the public to adopt basic hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing and wearing masks if experiencing flu-like symptoms. Children under 14 years and elderly individuals are particularly vulnerable to HMPV. Officials advised that anyone in these groups experiencing symptoms should seek prompt medical care.
The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) will continue to monitor the situation closely. Health officials assured the public that Meghalaya’s healthcare system is well-prepared and equipped to handle potential outbreaks, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
