Human trafficking racket busted in Tinsukia, 6 arrested

Dibrugarh: The villagers of Duarmara Singpo village nabbed a person suspected to be associated with human-trafficking when the accused reportedly took away two minor childrens from a tea estate.

Duarmara Singpo village is one of the remotest village in Assam’s Tinsukia district.

According to reports, Dipak Pukan was nabbed by the villagers on Wednesday afternoon when he tried to take away the two minors of Duarmara Singpo village.

The villagers handed Dipak Phukan to Pengeri police station and following his interrogation, five more persons linked to human-trafficking were arrested. The accused has been identified as- Umakanta Chetri, Boby Deori Sona, Rohit Khadal, Peter Sabashi and Ajit Munda.

A case no 28/2025 U/S 143(5)/3 (5) BNS registered at Pengeri police station.

“We have arrested six persons associated with human-trafficking network. The main accused Peter Sona has been on run. We have launched a man-hunt to nab him. They took away childrens from the tea garden areas and sold them to Arunachal Pradesh in household works,” said Sanjib Das investigation officer of Pengeri police station.

He said, “Further investigation has been going to find the linkages. The villagers of Duarmara Singpo village caught a person linked to human-trafficking when he came to take away the minor children. The villagers then informed us and we arrested the person. During interrogation, he reveled six names associated with the crime. Five were arrested but the main accused Peter Sona is on run,” said Das.

“We have seized a car bearing registration no(AS 23AF 5952) which has used by the human-traffickers to take away the children,” said the police officer.

Sources said the human-traffickers has been targeting the small children of the tea gardens of upper Assam.

“Most of the human-trafficking cases has been reported from Doomdooma area of Tinsukia. The human-trafficking has been thriving in tea gadens areas. The traffickers are targeting the poor tea garden workers,” said a source.

Recently, four children were rescued from the clutches of human trafficking network in Makum’s Tinsukia when a night bus bearing registration number (AR 11B4458) was intercepted abd four childrens were rescued from the bus which is going towards Itanagar.
