Guwahati: With winter and foggy season setting in, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is taking precautionary measures to ensure safe and efficient train operations.
The railway has implemented a series of measures focusing on track and equipment safety, visibility for train drivers, and emergency preparedness.
To combat potential issues caused by low temperatures, NFR is conducting thorough inspections and lubricating rail joints. They are also de-stressing long welded rails and continuously welded rails where needed. Additionally, identified rail and weld failure-prone locations are being addressed. Cold weather patrolling has been intensified with GPS-enabled monitoring to keep a close watch on rail conditions.
For improved visibility during foggy conditions, NFR has deployed advanced Fog PASS (Fog Pilot Assistance System for Safety) devices to aid train drivers in navigating safely and on time. Safety inspections of train roofs, under-gear components, locomotives, and rolling stock are being meticulously carried out using advanced technologies to preempt any potential risks.

The railway is also prioritizing track monitoring and maintenance, utilizing Ultrasonic Flaw Detection and other modern techniques to identify potential hazards. Signalling systems are being upgraded for seamless communication and operational reliability.
To further enhance safety, NFR has provided specialized training to frontline staff and is conducting regular mock drills to improve preparedness for unforeseen situations. A robust feedback mechanism has been put in place to monitor the effectiveness of these measures and ensure compliance with Railway Board directives.
