Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati held its 26th Convocation Ceremony, awarding degrees to 2,150 students, including 1682 male and 468 female graduates. The event saw the conferral of degrees in various disciplines:
- 932 B.Tech. and B.Des.
- 655 M.Tech. and M.Des.
- 277 PhD & Dual (Masters + PhD)
- 182 M.Sc.
- 54 M.A.
- 34 MS (Research)
- 16 MBA
Notable awards included Vedant Gaurang Shah receiving the President of India Gold Medal for the top score in the B.Tech/B.Des batch, Rethyam Gupta earning the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal, Arpita Ray being awarded the Governor of Assam PG Gold Medal, and Pranshu Kandoi receiving the Governor of Assam UG Gold Medal.
Padma Shri awardee Dr. Sridhar Vembu, Founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation, was the Chief Guest. Prof. Gautam Barua, Former Director of IIT Guwahati, attended as the Guest of Honor. Dr. Rajiv I. Modi, Chairman, Board of Governors, presided virtually, and Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao, Acting Chairperson, delivered the welcome address.
Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, highlighted the institute’s achievements in tech transfer, patent filings, and research publications, reflecting its innovative spirit. He emphasized IIT Guwahati’s rankings in NIRF 2023, Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, Nature 2024, and QS World University Rankings 2025.
Dr. Vembu encouraged graduates to embrace challenges and foster innovation, while Prof. Barua emphasized the importance of sustaining the institute’s growth and excellence.
IIT Guwahati’s initiatives include the “Digital Nerve Center” project in partnership with the National Health Mission Assam, TATA Medical & Diagnostics, and the Gates Foundation. The institute is also advancing interdisciplinary research, promoting a start-up culture, and creating jobs in the Northeast. It launched India’s largest Remote Pilot Training Organization for drone technology and hosted a training program for defense personnel.
IIT Guwahati has retained top positions in the NIRF rankings and achieved global recognition in Data Science and Petroleum Engineering.
