Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday visited the ongoing “Winter Adventure Tawang 2026” training programme at Panga Teng Tso (PT Tso) Lake, where trainees have been undergoing rigorous training since April 5.

Interacting with participants at the high-altitude site, Khandu described the initiative as “a step toward building a winter sports ecosystem in Arunachal Pradesh.”

He highlighted that 46 trainees are receiving expert instruction in skiing and snowboarding under the SkiMo India Federation, noting that the programme is not only nurturing local talent but also strengthening Tawang’s potential as a premier adventure tourism destination. He called it “a promising beginning for youth, sports, and sustainable tourism in the region.”

According to officials present during the visit, the Chief Minister was briefed by Shri Lhakpa Tsering, President of Adventure X-Fusion Tribe, the organisation managing the programme.

Tsering outlined that the initiative follows a structured 10-day training schedule designed specifically for the youth of Arunachal Pradesh, focusing on technical skills, endurance, and safety in winter sports.

The “Winter Adventure Tawang 2026” programme, which began on April 5, is being held at the scenic Panga Teng Tso Lake in Tawang and marks a significant push by the state to institutionalise winter sports.

Organised by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs and executed by Adventure X-Fusion Tribe, the training includes hands-on modules in skiing, snowboarding, and mountain preparedness under expert supervision.

Officials said the programme is part of a broader vision to position Tawang as a hub for winter sports and adventure tourism. The region’s natural terrain and snowfall conditions make it suitable for developing competitive and recreational winter sports infrastructure.

The training will culminate in the Open National Ski Mountaineering Championship, scheduled to be held immediately after the programme concludes. The event is expected to see participation from athletes representing Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Assam, as well as teams from the Army and the CRPF, signalling growing national interest in the initiative.

Local authorities have also emphasised the long-term benefits of such programmes, including youth engagement, skill development, and economic opportunities linked to tourism.
