Ukhrul: A nine-year-old schoolgirl was critically injured after a massive landslide struck a rented residential building in Manipur’s Ukhrul town around 12:30 am on Tuesday.
According to local sources, a large section of hillside, estimated to be nearly 200 feet above the house, collapsed onto the RCC building owned by Mahai NK of Chingai village. The landslide severely damaged the structure, destroying two rooms and three kitchens and sending residents into panic.
The girl, identified as Yakhari Kasar, daughter of Chihanso Kasar and Rinchui Jamang of Khangkhui Ohungdhar (Khunou) village, was trapped beneath the debris with only her head visible. Neighbours rescued her and rushed her to the District Hospital, where doctors described her condition as critical.
Preliminary medical reports indicate paralysis in both legs, internal bleeding, and fluid accumulation in her abdomen, sources said.
Her aunt, 23-year-old Leiyachan Jamang, who was also inside the building at the time, sustained injuries to her legs and back. She is reported to be in stable condition.
Sources said Yakhari, the eldest of four siblings, is a student at KTL Higher Secondary School in Ukhrul. She had been staying with her aunt, who works part-time at a local shop to support their basic living expenses while caring for the child.
The family, already facing financial hardship, is now grappling with mounting medical expenses and an even deeper financial crisis in the aftermath of the tragedy, the sources added.
