Agartala: Tipra Motha Party founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman and his sister Kriti Singh Debbarman on Monday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at New Delhi.
During the meeting, Debbarman urged the Centre to consider passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill and threw his weight behind the legislation which promises more autonomy to the areas protected under the sixth schedule of the constitution.
The MP from East Tripura constituency, also wrote a detailed letter addressing the Union Home Minister seeking his intervention in this regard.
Sharing the letter through his social media handle, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman said, “Met the Hon Home Minister of India along with my sister today . We discussed the tiprasa accord , patrolling of the border with Bangladesh , implementation of the 125th amendment in the Council areas . The Home minister will be visiting Tripura during this month and is keen on resolving issues related to the indigenous people of the state and region .”
Urging the Union Home Minister to pass the said Bill, East Tripura MP Kriti Debbarman wrote: “I am writing to express my sincere support for the 125th Amendment of the Indian Constitution, which aims to empower the Sixth Schedule areas of Northeast India, and to formally request your esteemed office to prioritise its passage. Recently, a significant meeting took place in Delhi, where representatives from all district councils of the Sixth Schedule regions presented their requests and grievances to you. I was encouraged by the positive response and the assurance you provided regarding swift action on this matter. It is heartening to learn that a three-member committee, led by Sri. Nityanand Rai Ji, Hon’ble Minister of State for Home Affairs, will be formed to address the demands and concerns of the Sixth Schedule district and territorial councils. This development has been widely reported in the media and has generated a wave of optimism among the people in our region.”
Stating that the Bill once passed assures to give more financial and legislative authority to Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, She added: “As an elected representative of a constituency that has a majority of its area under the sixth schedule, I also sense a pressing need and support the demand for giving more legislative and financial autonomy to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). The 125th Amendment (with all its proposals from the Standing Committee) holds tremendous potential to enhance the administrative and financial autonomy of the Sixth Schedule areas, thus ensuring more effective governance and development.”
