Agartala: A youth named Akash Miah, a resident of Melaghar Kamrangatali on the outskirts of Agartala, has been arrested for allegedly deceiving and attempting to abduct a girl by promising her a lucrative job in a South Indian state. The arrest was confirmed by Bijoy Das, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of AD Nagar Police Station, who informed media persons about the incident.
The youth reportedly concealed his religious identity to gain the girl’s trust and convince her to accompany him. The police intercepted the duo in the Surjya Para area under the jurisdiction of AD Nagar Police Station after receiving a tip-off.
Details of arrest
“At around 7 on Thursday evening, we received information that the accused was planning to elope with the Hindu girl. Upon being intercepted, the girl revealed during initial questioning that she had agreed to travel with him based on promises of a well-paying job in a South Indian state. She was unaware of the youth’s true religious identity,” OC Bijoy Das told reporters.
The case came to light after a civil volunteer assisting the police in rescue operations alerted authorities. Sankar Chandra Das, SDPO Amtali, elaborated on the operation, stating, “The girl had confided in one of her friends about her plans to leave the state for a job opportunity. When her friend expressed curiosity about how she had arranged the job, the girl revealed that a man she identified as one of her elder brother’s acquaintances was helping her. She even showed a photo of the youth.”
Suspicious of the arrangement, the friend reported the matter to the police, who launched an investigation. It was discovered that the accused had faked his identity to lure the girl. Acting swiftly, the police intercepted the youth and rescued the girl.
Charges filed against the accused
The police have registered a case against the accused for cheating and deceitful activities. “He was caught red-handed with the girl and has been taken into custody. The victim’s statement is being recorded as part of the investigation,” the SDPO said.
Authorities confirmed that the accused would soon be produced before the court for further legal proceedings. The incident has sparked concern among the local community about the safety of young women being misled under false pretenses. Police have urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant about their children’s activities and to report suspicious behavior to authorities immediately.
