Agartala: In an effort to bolster the tea industry in Tripura, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has proposed the introduction of a “Tea Science” subject at the state-run Maharaja Bir Bikram University.
This initiative aims to provide the necessary scientific knowledge and skills to support the sustainable growth of the tea sector.
Dr. Saha was drawing the attention of tea enthusiasts during the foundation stone laying ceremony of the state’s first tea auction center.
He emphasized the potential of the tea industry to accelerate industrial growth in the state and highlighted the need for scientific interventions to ensure its long-term prosperity.
“The lackluster tea industry could see a revival with the intervention of the BJP government, but we must create a sustainable environment for its persistent growth,” Dr Saha added.
“I have urged the authorities of MBB University to initiate a course in Tea Science. Well-trained manpower is essential for the success of any industry.”
Reflecting on the challenges faced by the tea industry, Dr. Saha recalled the impact of decades-long insurgency and the subsequent troubles caused by chit-fund companies. He assured that the government is taking legal action against offenders involved in the Chit Fund scam.
“The tea industry endured significant hardships during the insurgency period, with estate owners and workers bearing the brunt of the violence,” remarked Dr. Saha. “Despite these challenges, the industry persevered. Now, with the support of scientific knowledge and skilled manpower, we aim to ensure its sustained growth.”
Taking a swipe at the opposition CPIM, Dr. Saha accused them of offering empty promises to tea garden workers. He highlighted the efforts of the BJP government in increasing their wages and providing land allocations, making them eligible for benefits under PM Awas Yojana.
“While the CPIM sheds crocodile tears for tea garden workers, it is the BJP government that has taken concrete steps to improve their livelihoods,” Dr. Saha asserted. “We remain committed to the welfare of tea workers and will continue to support initiatives that benefit them.”
