Nagaland Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir has presented a series of transformative proposals to address developmental challenges and unlock the economic potential of the Northeast during the recent Consultative Committee meeting of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). Themed “New Development Framework for the North-East,” the meeting focused on enhancing regional growth and addressing critical gaps.
Jamir emphasized the need for increased budget allocations to the North Eastern Council (NEC) to support crucial infrastructure projects. He proposed revising the fund release policy for DoNER projects, suggesting a 50% advance fund release to expedite project execution, particularly in areas with limited working seasons due to extended rains.
The MP also called for a transparent mechanism to equitably allocate the mandatory 10% Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) for the region, ensuring unspent funds are accounted for and distributed fairly among the states. He urged the government to declare the 320.25 km Foothill Road in Nagaland as a National Highway, highlighting its potential as a strategic economic corridor.
Jamir sought intervention to complete the long-pending Dimapur Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex, originally estimated at ₹135 crore but discontinued under NITI Aayog. He proposed rotational hosting of NEC plenaries by North Eastern states to foster inclusivity in decision-making.
Tourism was a key focus, with Jamir advocating for initiatives to position Nagaland as a year-round destination through eco-tourism and cultural tourism, beyond the popular Hornbill Festival. He highlighted the state’s disaster vulnerability and stressed the need for resilient infrastructure to ensure reliable connectivity during emergencies.
To drive economic growth, Jamir pushed for robust digital infrastructure to position Nagaland as a hub for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services, leveraging its skilled workforce and English proficiency. He also sought expedited approvals for developmental projects to address the state’s limited ₹1,010 crore developmental outlay for 2024-25.
The proposals aim to align with the region’s goals of inclusive and sustainable growth, addressing unique challenges and unlocking new opportunities for progress.
