In Episode 23 of Impulse Model Entrepreneur Stories, the spotlight shines on Imiri Kuku, the founder of Bamboo Valley Creations, a bamboo-based enterprise rooted in the picturesque town of Roing. The series, produced by Impulse Empower in collaboration with filmmaker Lewis Levent, captures Kuku’s inspiring journey of entrepreneurship and his efforts to promote bamboo as a sustainable, eco-friendly material.
Kuku’s entrepreneurial venture began before the pandemic, in 2020, when he laid the foundation of his home-based industry, Bamboo Valley Creations. Despite the global challenges brought on by COVID-19, his business has continued to grow steadily. The visionary behind the enterprise, Kuku, focused on utilising bamboo not only as a sustainable resource but also as a means to support local employment. With a small team of 6-7 employees, he embarked on his mission to irrigate and treat bamboo for industrial purposes, ensuring consistent growth and durability of the material.
Speaking about his journey, Kuku emphasised that his business was built entirely from his own efforts, with no financial support from friends or family. His dedication to Bamboo Valley Creations is evident in his innovative approach to water treatment for bamboo, which has significantly enhanced the quality and lifespan of the raw material, making it more suitable for industrial applications.
The episode, directed by Lewis Levent Özcan, highlights not only Kuku’s entrepreneurial journey but also the broader context of local economic development. The Impulse Empower series, with support from Meta India, aims to showcase the stories of small and medium enterprises that are transforming local economies across the eight states of North East India and North Bengal. These success stories serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for entrepreneurs in the region, demonstrating the potential of home-grown businesses to create jobs and contribute to sustainable development.
Filmmaker Özcan, who serves as Impulse Empower Incubation Hub Entrepreneur in Residence, travelled across the Northeast to capture the stories of entrepreneurs like Kuku. His films aim to showcase how local enterprises are driving systems change in the region, helping to prevent unsafe migration and exploitation while promoting economic upliftment.
The documentary, produced by Hasina Kharbhih under Impulse NGO Network, highlights the vital role that entrepreneurs like Kuku play in building a resilient market in the region. With the collaboration of state partners such as Sunil Mow, the series also sheds light on the importance of sustainable business practices in ensuring long-term economic stability.
