Gangtok: A peaceful rally led by Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) party supremo Pawan Kumar Chamling in Namchi on Monday turned chaotic as it was allegedly attacked by supporters of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).
The unsettling incident occurred in the central square of Central Park amid the presence of Sikkim Police personnel.
Following a puja ceremony at Namchi Bazar, Chamling’s procession was intercepted by a multitude of SKM supporters who attempted to physically assault him.
Despite efforts by SDF supporters to fend off the attackers, the situation escalated as SKM supporters targeted numerous SDF supporters, including women. Several victims of the assault were admitted to the hospital with severe injuries.

“Many SDF supporters including women were beaten severely and taken to the hospital. This is a murder of democracy whereby candidates of opposition party are at risk and being attacked everyday by Prem Singh Golay’s goons, the SDF said.
“SDF party condemns the aggressive and criminal tactics of PS Golay who is unfit to hold any post in government,” it added.
