Train services connecting Mizoram with Assam have been disrupted after heavy rainfall caused soil erosion near a railway track between Jamira in Assam and Bairabi in Mizoram, officials said.
The affected portion falls along the Katakhal-Bairabi railway section. According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), around 70 metres of track has been affected following heavy rain on the evening of September 3.
Restoration work has begun at the site, but the absence of direct road access to the affected stretch is making repair operations more difficult. Railway authorities are assessing the damage and monitoring restoration work, which could take some time because of the site’s accessibility constraints.
Several train services have consequently been cancelled or curtailed.
Among the trains cancelled for September 4 are the Guwahati-Sairang Express, Silchar-Bairabi Express, Sairang-Kolkata Express and Bairabi-Silchar Express.
The Silchar-Sairang Express and Sairang-Silchar Express scheduled to operate on September 5 have also been cancelled.
Meanwhile, the Sairang-Guwahati Express scheduled for September 4 will originate from Hailakandi instead of Sairang. Its service between Sairang and Hailakandi has been cancelled.
Similarly, the Sairang-Anand Vihar Terminal Express scheduled for September 4 will also originate from Hailakandi, with services between Sairang and Hailakandi cancelled.
The railway authorities said restoration efforts are underway and the situation is being closely assessed.
