Guwahati: In the wake of the devastating Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that ravaged parts of Sikkim on October 3-4 last year, residents of Chungthang in North Sikkim appealed to the High Court of Sikkim for redressal and justice.
Through an application, the residents cited that the aftermath of the disaster, compounded by the failure of the Teesta Stage III dam and the absence of a warning system in vulnerable areas, has left the community grappling with profound losses.
In a heartfelt plea addressed to the Chief Justice, residents of Chungthang detailed the extensive damage inflicted upon their community. Seeking urgent intervention and support, they highlighted that movable and immovable properties, along with livestock, have suffered irreparable harm.
Despite their efforts to seek recourse, including petitions to the Chief Minister of Sikkim, through the aread MLA, and the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) citing negligence by Teesta Urja Pvt. Ltd., the affected residents have been met with inadequate responses from authorities.
Left with few options, the community convened a Gram Sabha on January 16, 2024, where it was unanimously agreed to seek justice through legal channels.
In their petition before the High Court, the residents have earnestly requested the initiation of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to thoroughly assess the damages incurred.

They emphasised the necessity for proper compensation, rehabilitation, and resettlement to address the plight of all affected individuals.
The petition implored the High Court to consider their application and pass appropriate orders to ensure justice prevails in the face of this dual natural and human-made disaster. With humility and hope, the residents said that they await a favorable response from the temple of Justice.
