Gyalshing: Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay inaugurated the academic building ‘Gyan Kunj’ at Geyzing College, now called Sanchaman Limboo Government Degree College on Sunday, putting an end to years of controversies and protests surrounding the delayed construction. The college, formerly marred by disputes that resulted in student arrests, celebrated a significant milestone with the inauguration of its academic block.
The institution, renamed in memory of former Chief Minister Sanchaman Limboo, witnessed the presence of his family during the inauguration. Limboo, who also served as the education minister, left a lasting legacy. The college, now known as Sanchaman Limboo Government Degree College, also incorporated the name of Arigaon village, acknowledging its significance.
From its humble beginnings in a rented building with 50 students, the college has evolved to accommodate over 1,500 students, 60 faculty members, and 30 administrative staff in its new premises.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay acknowledged the collective effort of ‘team Sikkim’ in overcoming challenges to complete the construction. Reflecting on his earlier visit to the old rented building when he was an opposition legislator, Golay emphasised the need for a proper college infrastructure, a promise fulfilled by the SKM government.
During the construction phase, the government encountered obstacles such as pending bills from the previous administration. Golay revealed that the SKM government modified the project, increasing the cost estimation to ensure the college had all the necessary facilities for a full-fledged campus. The total project cost amounted to Rs 99.53 crore, and Golay urged students to view the college not as government property but as their own.
Despite facing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the college was constructed according to the demands of the students. Golay recounted a meeting with the student representative council in March 2020, where he listened to their grievances and promised completion of various works within a specified timeframe.

Looking ahead, the state government committed to adding a science stream, responding to student demands, and introducing a physical education degree course at the graduation level. Education Minister Kunga Nima Lepcha emphasized the college’s infrastructure, stating that it rivals any private college in the country. He urged the students to maintain the sanctity of the college as a place for learning.
