Imphal: Renowned Manipur fashion designer Robert Naorem showcased his latest collection at an international fashion event in Milan, Italy, on Sunday, presenting the state’s handloom and textile traditions on a global fashion platform.
Held at the Meliá Milano Hotel, the event featured 27 shows by designers from different parts of the world. Naorem’s showcase featured 22 models wearing his creations, which incorporated textiles produced in Manipur.
The showcase also marked 10 years since the official launch of the Robert Naorem label, a decade during which the designer has focused on promoting Manipur’s handloom, textiles and craftsmanship to wider audiences.
The show was organised in collaboration with the Department of Sericulture, Government of Manipur, with support from Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh.
The collection brought together traditional textiles from Manipur with contemporary designs conceptualised and created by Naorem. He was selected to open the sequence of shows at the event, placing Manipur’s textile traditions at the beginning of the international presentation.
Organised by Prasanna and New Stars, the event brought together designers and fashion professionals from countries including the UK, Germany, Italy and Kazakhstan.
Milan, regarded as one of the major fashion capitals of the world, has previously served as a platform for Naorem to present Manipur’s textiles and design traditions to international audiences. The latest showcase provided another opportunity to connect the state’s textile heritage with the global fashion industry.
The event was attended by fashion personalities, industry professionals and other guests from Italy and beyond.
