Aizawl: A meeting on illegal cross-border trade and transportation of goods was held at the Office Chamber of the Deputy Commissioner in Lawngtlai on Monday, with officials and civil society representatives discussing measures to strengthen enforcement along the international border with Myanmar.
Deputy Commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga, who chaired the meeting, called on all concerned agencies to ensure strict compliance with laws governing trade and transportation. He stressed the need for thorough verification of goods transported from Lawngtlai district towards Myanmar and called for appropriate action against violations.
The meeting also discussed reports of vehicles being purchased or operated in the names of non-Indian citizens, as well as cases involving stolen vehicles and the illegal sale and transfer of vehicles.
Lalruatsanga stressed the need for close investigation of such cases, particularly given Lawngtlai’s location along the international border. He said the district administration would continue to take necessary measures and sought the cooperation of voluntary organisations and residents in enforcing laws and orders.
Reports were presented by the Additional Superintendent of Police, Taxation Officer of the Lai Autonomous District Council, Assam Rifles, Central Young Lai Association (CYLA) and AOC YLA branches, followed by discussions on measures to strengthen enforcement.
The meeting agreed that the district administration, Mizoram Police and LADC should continue their efforts, while YLA branches located along the international border and other NGOs should extend their cooperation.
It also noted that several reports concerning vehicles missing from within Mizoram and outside the state had already been followed up. The AOC Veng YLA Branch was specifically acknowledged for its efforts, with participants calling for continued joint action.
The meeting also discussed the growing importance of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) road through Zorinpui for trade with Myanmar. With activities along the route expected to increase, participants stressed the need for strict enforcement of laws and regulations to prevent illegal activities.
NGOs, particularly CYLA and YLA branches, were identified as important partners in supporting government initiatives related to border management and enforcement. The meeting called for strengthened coordination among government agencies and civil society organisations to safeguard the interests and welfare of people in the district and protect the state.
