Guwahati: As part of the birth centenary celebrations of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Creativity at Assam Royal Global University (RGU) will inaugurate the Sudhakantha Museum on its campus and host a Centenary Oration Series from 8 to 26 September 2025.
The inaugural ceremony on 8 September will be attended by Assam Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora and Sattriya dancer and entrepreneur Mridusmita Das Bora.
Professor Emeritus Amarjyoti Choudhury, Chair Professor of the Centre, said the centenary year provides an opportunity to renew admiration for Bhupen Hazarika’s legacy.
This year marks the birth centenary of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, and we believe it is an opportunity to regenerate public enthusiasm and admiration for him in a way that can endure for at least another 100 years—until the next centenary, Choudhury said.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive study of Hazarika’s work to highlight his contributions globally. His legacy lies in staying deeply rooted in his culture while reaching out to embrace universal dimensions. The objective is to study his creative methods and apply them across other disciplines of the University, enabling students to understand how creativity can connect them to society and, in turn, bring recognition and rewards from it, he added.
The Centenary Oration Series will include talks from academics, historians and cultural figures. Choudhury will open the series with an oration titled The Song that Fetched New Seeds: Sudhakantha at His Creative Height. Historian Shiela Bora will speak on Mohabahu Brahmaputra: The Sentinel of History and the Multifaceted Cultural Traditions of Assam.
Bimal Kumar Dev Medhi will present on the musical performances Xaagor Xongomot and Mahabahu Brahmaputra, while P.J. Baruah, Distinguished Professor at RSCOM, RGU, will discuss Dr Bhupen Hazarika: Philosopher and Guide to Assamese Identity.
Other speakers include Pradip Jyoti Mahanta of RGU’s Department of English, who will discuss Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s Art Persona and Sankaradeva, and Surajit Mukhopadhyay, Director of the Centre for Inter-Disciplinary Research, who will address Songs of Resistance and Hope: The Idea of Universality in Bhupen Hazarika.
The organisers said the oration series aims to engage admirers and followers of Bhupen Hazarika in reflecting on his life and legacy.
