Imphal: Tensions ran high at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal on Tuesday night after a 52-year-old woman from Imphal West, admitted for orthopaedic surgery, died during the surgical procedure. The incident triggered anger among family members, who staged a protest alleging that she died due to medical negligence.
The deceased has been identified as Hijam Ongbi Ibecha of Awang Sekmai Laipak. According to her family, she was administered a wrong injection during the surgery, which allegedly caused heart failure and led to her death.
Following the incident, family members of the victim, along with friends and locals, confronted the attending doctor and held a meeting with hospital authorities. They later staged a protest inside the RIMS premises, demanding justice and strict action against those responsible.
The aggrieved family also refused to collect the body from the ICU until their demands were met, insisting that accountability be fixed before the cremation could take place.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered by the deceased’s family at Lamphel police station, calling for a thorough probe into the circumstances leading to her death.
