Imphal: A displaced Manipur Rifles havaldar, currently attached to the Imphal West Manipur Police Commando, died after allegedly shooting himself at a family quarter in Imphal West on Monday, an official said.
According to a police official, the incident occurred at around 4.15 pm at a family quarter inside the Commando Complex under the jurisdiction of Imphal Police Station. He was rushed to Raj Medicity Hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds and was later declared dead.
The havaldar was originally from Khumajamba Leikai in Churachandpur and had been displaced along with his family since ethnic conflict erupted in the state in May 2023. The exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained.
He was serving with the Imphal West Police Commando unit on attachment from the 7th Manipur Rifles.
The incident comes amid discussions on the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons during the last session of the Manipur Assembly. In the House, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said around 36,000 displaced people had been resettled out of a total of 60,000 IDPs, while about 24,000 remained in relief camps.
