Modernisation of signalling and safety systems underway in N.F. Railway

The Northeast Frontier Railway (N.F. Railway) is actively upgrading its infrastructure to improve the safety and reliability of train operations across its network. As part of these efforts, the zone has introduced a range of advanced measures during November 2024, aimed at enhancing safety standards and operational efficiency.

One notable development was the installation of Thick Web Switch Point machines with clamp-type locking at 31 stations across the zone. These machines are designed to improve the safety features of railway operations, reducing risks associated with track switching mechanisms.

In the same period, N.F. Railway upgraded its signalling systems in several sections. Sliding booms were commissioned at four level crossing gates in Katihar, one in Alipurduar, and two in the Lumding division. Additionally, electric lifting barriers were installed at two level crossing gates in Katihar and two in the Tinsukia division to bolster safety measures.

New signalling cables, spanning a total of 8.013 km, were laid at various stations in Tinsukia, Lumding, Rangiya, and Alipurduar divisions. To prevent potential damage to railway assets, automatic fire detection and alarm systems were installed at Rahamatpur and Arariya Court stations in Katihar division.

System integrity testing was carried out at 25 level crossing gates, ensuring optimal functionality of critical safety systems. Furthermore, 381 signalling batteries of varying capacities were replaced across all five divisions, improving the reliability of essential equipment.

Modern communication systems are also being utilised to provide real-time visual information to drivers and operators, aiding precise and safe train movements.
