Dibrugarh: A six-member Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) on Sunday toured flood-ravaged Charaideo district to assess the devastation caused by this year’s floods in Assam.
The team, led by Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary M Ramachandrudu, comprises senior officials from the Central Water Commission, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Rural Development, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC).
The delegation began its visit in Sumoni, one of the worst-affected villages, inspecting inundated homes and submerged agricultural fields while interacting with displaced residents.
The officials assessed ongoing rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts and took stock of the extensive damage to crops, property and infrastructure.
Charaideo Deputy Commissioner Neha Yadav briefed the team on relief camp operations, the distribution of essential supplies, and preliminary damage estimates.
“We have shared detailed data on the damage to roads, embankments and agricultural land. This assessment is crucial for us to secure adequate Central support,” an official said.
The visit marks the start of a multi-day tour covering four severely affected districts — Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat. The assessment, which will conclude on July 29, will include a review of relief operations, inspections of damaged infrastructure and the use of NRSC satellite data to evaluate the extent of the destruction.
The flood situation in Assam improved on Sunday as water levels receded in most affected areas that did not receive overnight rainfall. However, more than 6.5 lakh people across six districts continued to be affected, while the death toll from this year’s floods stood at 66.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him on Sunday to take detailed stock of the flood situation in Assam.
Sharing the update on X, Sonowal wrote: “Received a call from Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji a short while ago, who took detailed stock of the ongoing flood situation in Assam. I am currently in Dibrugarh, visiting the affected areas, assessing the ground situation and standing with our affected brothers and sisters.”
“PM Modi ji has always held Assam close to his heart. Reflecting his commitment to swift action, an Inter-Ministerial team has already reached Assam and is moving rapidly to the affected districts,” he added.
“The Modi Government stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Assam and has assured all necessary support for relief and rehabilitation. I extend my deepest gratitude to PM Modi ji for his constant concern and unwavering support,” Sonowal said.
Speaking to reporters in Dibrugarh, Sonowal said, “Eleven districts of Assam were affected in the recent wave of floods. Nazira, Sivasagar, Sonari and Charaideo in Upper Assam were among the worst hit. The state government has been relentlessly carrying out rescue operations in the flood-affected areas. All state government departments are working in close coordination.”
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have been taking regular updates on the flood situation from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called me to enquire about the flood situation in Assam and assured all possible assistance,” he added.
On Saturday, Sonowal reviewed relief measures at camps in Sivasagar district and directed officials to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare, food, safe drinking water and other essential services.
During his visit to the relief camp at Lakhimi Nagar ME School in Sivasagar, the Dibrugarh MP interacted with displaced families to assess their well-being and reviewed the availability of essential supplies. He instructed officials to remain vigilant and ensure that no flood-affected family faced hardship in accessing basic necessities.
Later, the Union Minister visited the relief camp at Bir Lachit Borphukan College in Bihubor, where he again met affected families and reviewed arrangements for food, drinking water and the distribution of relief materials.
