Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati served as the nodal centre for the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2024 Grand Finale, which concluded on 12th December. The event brought together student teams from across the country to address 186 problem statements, focusing on solutions for real-world challenges across diverse themes.
Participants tackled topics including agriculture, biotechnology, clean energy, cybersecurity, disaster management, space technology, and transportation. The event highlighted the potential of technological innovation to address pressing issues while fostering creativity and problem-solving among India’s youth.
At IIT Guwahati, the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) presented four specific challenges, including systems for detecting deepfake videos and cryptographic algorithms. Teams worked intensively for 36 hours to develop solutions, supported by mentors and evaluated by expert juries.
Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, emphasised the hackathon’s role in encouraging innovation. “The themes addressed by participants underline the transformative potential of technology in solving critical problems,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted virtually with participants, encouraging them to think innovatively to solve global and local challenges. He highlighted the role of the hackathon in nurturing talent and driving impactful solutions, aligning with the vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”
Participants shared their experiences, highlighting the collaborative and learning opportunities provided by the event. Ms. Rajeshwari Mughilan, a student from Kongu Engineering College, described working on data security and encryption projects. Other students worked on challenges involving AI and machine learning applications, aiming to address issues in cybersecurity and forensic analysis.

The event included an interactive session led by AICTE Chairperson Prof. T.G. Sitharam, who inspired participants to push the boundaries of innovation. Prof. Bithiah Grace Jaganathan, Professor in-charge of the IIT Guwahati nodal centre, remarked on the participants’ ingenuity in addressing complex challenges, highlighting the potential of such initiatives to drive technological advancements.
Launched in 2017 by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell and AICTE, the Smart India Hackathon promotes the development of practical solutions to national challenges. Winning teams collaborate with ministries to refine and implement their projects, transforming innovative ideas into actionable solutions aimed at improving governance and quality of life in India.
