The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has enhanced its efforts to trace stolen and lost mobile phones belonging to railway passengers, utilising the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). This initiative has led to the recovery of 49 lost mobile phones and the arrest of 12 individuals since its implementation.
Passengers reporting their lost or stolen mobile phones through the Rail Madad App have their cases facilitated by the Cyber Crime Wing of NFR. By leveraging the CEIR portal, the RPF can trace the phones across Assam’s telecom networks, with plans to expand this facility across other states under its jurisdiction.
The initiative began in May 2024, following coordination efforts led by the Principal Chief Security Commissioner (PCSC) of NFR, involving Assam Police’s CID team, the Department of Telecommunications in Guwahati, and officials from the Ministry of Communication in New Delhi. Since then, 687 lost or stolen mobile phones have been blocked through the portal, with 277 devices successfully traced and 49 recovered.
