Shillong: Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh outlined a forward-looking vision for India’s textile industry on Friday, highlighting the Northeast’s integral role in driving the sector. Addressing attendees at the inauguration of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Shillong’s permanent campus and its 12th convocation ceremony, Singh emphasized innovation and the Northeast’s essential contribution to India’s textile market.
Minister Singh acknowledged the Northeast’s significant impact on the industry, stating that handloom, technical textiles, and handicrafts from the region contribute over ₹45,000 crore in exports. “The Northeast plays a vital role in our billion-dollar market,” he said, reinforcing that the region is central to India’s textile identity.
At the event, which also celebrated the graduation of NIFT Shillong’s Class of 2024, Singh commended the graduates’ efforts, calling it a “pivotal moment.” He said, “Today marks a milestone where we inaugurate a state-of-the-art campus while celebrating the hard work of our graduates. Your journey begins anew—embrace the challenges ahead, innovate, and inspire. The future of fashion is in your hands.”
Singh further stressed the importance of technology in protecting and promoting Indian design, stating, “If our students create beautiful designs through hard work, we must equip them with tools and technology to protect their creativity.” Recalling his early days in the textiles department, Singh said, “I am committed to elevating this department to national and global recognition.” He noted his discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on how, after agriculture, the textiles sector holds the highest potential for job creation.
Looking ahead, Singh spoke on the growth potential of India’s textile industry, projecting it to expand to $350 billion by 2030, generating millions of jobs. He emphasized the need to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the design process, resonating with Prime Minister Modi’s vision that “design permeates all sectors, especially fashion, which will be our strength.”
Singh praised VisionNxt, NIFT’s Indigenous trend forecasting initiative, asserting, “We need not depend on other nations.” He announced plans to establish NIFT campuses abroad and urged students to carry the Bharat brand globally. “Wherever you go, take the Bharat brand with you,” he encouraged, underscoring the goal of elevating India’s green, sustainable textile products on the global stage.
The programme also saw attendance from Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita, Meghalaya’s Minister of Textiles Paul Lyngdoh, and senior officials from both the central and state governments, underscoring the collaborative effort to bolster India’s textile sector.
