Officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) have been enthusiastically participating in the nationwide “Swachhata Hi Seva 2024” campaign, a drive that focuses on cleanliness and environmental sustainability. This movement, which commenced on 16th September and will continue until 2nd October, aligns with the 10th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission and concludes on Swachh Bharat Diwas, honouring the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
The theme for this year, “Swabhav Swachhata – Sanskaar Swachhata,” emphasises the importance of individual responsibility and collective efforts in maintaining cleanliness across the nation. The campaign seeks to raise awareness on proper hygiene, discourage open defecation, and encourage cleanliness in railway stations and tracks. From day one, NFR organised a variety of activities in railway colonies, workplaces, and station premises to spread awareness among employees, their families, and passengers.
The campaign was officially launched on 16th September with a Swachhata Pledge at the NFR headquarters, where Principal Heads of Departments (PHODs), Heads of Departments (HODs), and staff participated. At Guwahati Railway Station, a Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir was organised, where personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and safety gear were distributed to sanitation workers, known as Safai Mitras. The camp also provided information on central government schemes aimed at supporting these workers. Health check-up camps for Safai Mitras were established at Divisional Railway Hospitals in New Tinsukia, Dibrugarh Town, Rangiya, and Dibrugarh.
On 19th September, the General Manager of N.F. Railway, Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, along with other senior officials and their families, took part in a walkathon from Maligaon Officers Colony to Railway Stadium. The walkathon, held under the slogan “Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat,” was organised across all divisions of NFR to promote the message of cleanliness. In addition, various sporting events were conducted to promote the connection between a healthy life and a clean environment.

As part of the campaign’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, alongside N.F. Railway (Construction) General Manager Arun Kumar Chaudhary and other senior officers, led a plantation drive in Maligaon. Another notable initiative was the sale of recycled plastic waste products at Guwahati Railway Station, promoting the “Waste to Art” concept. This sale encouraged the idea of recycling and creatively reusing waste materials, contributing to environmental sustainability.
In an effort to raise awareness, a door-to-door cleanliness awareness and garbage collection drive was conducted across the NFR’s railway colonies. This initiative aimed to sensitise residents about the importance of maintaining clean and hygienic surroundings.
