Imphal: The Manipur government has announced the closure of all schools in the state on Saturday, September 7 following fresh violence. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and teachers amid rising tensions.
An official order issued by L Nandakumar Singh, Director of Education (S), stated, “In view of the unrest and prevailing situation in the state, and keeping in mind the safety of the students and teachers, all government, government-aided, private, and central schools in the state will remain closed on September 7, 2024.”
Zonal education officers across the state have been directed to inform all concerned institutions under their respective jurisdictions and take necessary actions accordingly.
The school closure order follows a suspected aerial bomb attack in the Moirang area of Bishnupur district, which claimed the life of 72-year-old priest RK Rabei Singh from Moirang Pheewangbam Leikai.
Singh was killed on the spot while preparing for the Asti ceremony at the home of former Chief Minister late M Koireng in Sendra Moirang. Five others, including a 13-year-old girl, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) hospital in Imphal for treatment.

Following the attack, local MLA and police officials attempted to assess the ground situation but were denied entry by irate locals, causing a commotion at the site.
In response to the escalating violence, the Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has declared a public emergency, urging residents to stay indoors for their safety.
