Guwahati: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the highly anticipated 3rd North East Games at the Games Village in Sovima on March 18, amid a gathering of dignitaries, athletes, and sports enthusiasts from across the region. Rio, who also heads the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA), hailed the event as a testament to sportsmanship and camaraderie, with a vision to foster unity among the North-eastern states.
Addressing the audience, Rio highlighted the vast potential of the northeast region, not only in terms of its picturesque landscapes and mineral resources but also in its human capital. Despite facing challenges, particularly in connectivity, Rio commended the efforts of the Government of India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in developing the region’s infrastructure and addressing connectivity issues.
With over 3000 participants, Rio emphasized the significance of the event, noting that while the Northeast region may be small in terms of population and geographical area, it boasts a remarkable representation in sports. Citing statistics from past international events, Rio pointed out that the region has consistently punched above its weight, with a significant percentage of athletes representing India.
Rio expressed hope that the states of the region would continue to collaborate, positioning the northeast as a powerhouse in Indian sports. He asserted, “Nobody can stop the North East from moving forward and becoming a significant contributor to the nation, especially in the field of sports.”
Abu Metha, Secretary General of the Nagaland Olympic Association, echoed Rio’s sentiments, describing the event as the “biggest and largest gathering of one people” in the region. He emphasized the historical significance of sports in the region, noting its deep-rooted cultural connections.
The North East Games will feature competitions in 15 disciplines across 12 venues in Chümoukedima, Dimapur, and Kohima, with more than 1400 medals up for grabs. Metha emphasized that sports have been an integral part of life in the region since ancient times, with each athlete serving as an ambassador of unity and justice.
The competitive events are scheduled to commence on March 19 and will run until March 23. Metha expressed confidence that the young athletes participating in the games would make India proud on the international stage.
As the curtains rise on the 3rd North East Games, the spotlight shines on the region’s rich sporting heritage and its promising future in the realm of Indian sports.
