Guwahati: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Dalhousie University, Canada, and Gifu University, Japan, aimed at fostering knowledge exchange and academic enrichment.
These MoUs signed for five years with possibilities of extension, mark a significant stride towards promoting cross-cultural learning and research collaboration. Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Officiating Director of IIT Guwahati, expressed pride in these partnerships, emphasizing the institute’s commitment to nurturing students’ academic and personal growth through international collaborations. He highlighted the goal of providing students with diverse learning experiences and opportunities for holistic development.
The MoU with Dalhousie University, Canada, focuses on establishing a Joint Doctoral Program to facilitate dynamic research collaborations between scholars and students from both institutions. This initiative aims to foster joint research activities, exchange programs for students and academic staff, and the sharing of research materials. Prof. P. Balakrishnan from Dalhousie University signed the MoU alongside Prof. Rajeev Ahuja of IIT Guwahati.
Furthermore, IIT Guwahati has forged three MoUs with Gifu University, Japan, including an ‘International Joint PhD Program’ and a ‘Joint Masters Degree Program in Food Science and Technology.’ These initiatives are designed to offer students a comprehensive educational experience through collaborative coursework, joint supervision of dissertation work, and rigorous evaluation processes.
Additionally, a ‘Glocal Expert Program’ has been established under the Inter-University Exchange Project (IUEP), enabling students to obtain certification from both universities as exchange students, fostering cross-cultural learning and enhancing global competencies. Prof. Kazuhiro Yoshida, President of Gifu University, endorsed these agreements, further solidifying the partnership between the institutions.
These partnerships were formalized during the ‘Japan-NER Bioeconomic Technology Cooperation Symposium 2024’ (JNBTCS-2024), hosted by IIT Guwahati from 3rd to 5th March 2024. The symposium aims to explore essential technical areas for accelerating bio-economic development in Japan and Northeast India, featuring multiple invited talks and poster presentations.
