The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is set to bolster its passenger services by introducing additional General Class (GS) coaches to 39 trains, as part of Indian Railways’ nationwide capacity augmentation initiative. This move aims to improve travel experiences for general-class passengers, accommodating growing demand and ensuring comfort and accessibility.
Indian Railways has been proactive in enhancing capacity for general-class passengers. By November 2024, over 1,000 new GS coaches will have been added to nearly 370 regular trains, allowing an estimated one lakh additional passengers to travel daily. This push reflects the commitment to inclusivity and convenience across the rail network.
Between July and October alone, 600 GS coaches were integrated into approximately 370 trains, with the total reaching 1,000 by the end of November. Over the next two years, plans are in place to introduce more than 10,000 non-AC coaches, including over 6,000 GS coaches, increasing daily capacity for around 8 lakh additional passengers nationwide.
These newly introduced coaches follow the advanced Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) design, which offers enhanced speed, safety, and passenger comfort. LHB coaches are lighter, sturdier, and provide improved protection in case of accidents, further prioritising passenger safety.

NFR has already augmented 36 trains with 276 GS coaches, significantly boosting capacity in its operational zone. By the end of December 2024, an additional 16 GS coaches will be added to three more trains. These enhancements underline NFR’s commitment to addressing the needs of general-class passengers while supporting Indian Railways’ broader expansion goals.
