Elderly WB trekker rescued at Dzükou Valley; trekking halted

Kohima: The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO), in collaboration with the Southern Angami Tour Guide Council (SATGC), successfully rescued a 70-year-old woman trekker from West Bengal on December 11 after she suffered a fall while trekking to Dzükou Valley and reportedly dislocated her hip.

According to officials, the incident occurred along the trekking trail when the elderly tourist slipped and sustained the injury. Rescue volunteers improvised a stretcher using a bedsheet to evacuate her. Due to the difficult terrain, she was also carried on the back across certain stretches of the trail.

A physiotherapist assessed her condition at the site, following which she was transported back to a homestay. The rescue operation continued late into the night owing to the challenging terrain and the tourist’s condition.

SAYO said the tour guides involved in the operation had undergone basic disaster management and first-aid training under the Tourism Department, which proved crucial in handling the emergency. The organisation also expressed gratitude to the Community Health Centre (CHC) Viswema for promptly providing an ambulance to support the rescue effort.

Reiterating safety protocols, SAYO stated that it is mandatory for visitors to Dzükou Valley to hire tour guides registered with the organisation. It noted that during the recent Hornbill Festival, several tourists attempted to trek without guides, leading to safety concerns and disruptions at the entry point.

Meanwhile, SAYO has issued an urgent advisory suspending all trekking activities to Dzükou Valley following a fire outbreak reported at Western Dzükou on Friday. The suspension has been imposed as a precautionary measure amid concerns that the fire could spread towards the Southern Dzükou Valley.

Trekking will remain suspended until the fire is fully extinguished and safety is completely ensured. While expressing regret over the inconvenience caused, SAYO said the decision was taken strictly in the interest of public safety.
