Imphal: Robert Naorem, an acclaimed fashion designer and State Director for Miss Universe Manipur, has withdrawn the ‘Best National Costume’ (Popular Choice category) award, which was won by Manipur’s contestant, Danube Kangjam, at Miss Universe India 2024.
This decision follows widespread dissatisfaction in the state after Danube Kangjam was excluded from the top 20 selection at the pageant event held in Jaipur on Sunday evening.
Expressing disappointment on social media, Naorem stated, “I wish we don’t get the national costume & instead Danube been on the top 20 would have been much more happier.”
The designer further said that she (Danube Kangjam) deserves to be on top 20 and emphasised that the whole Manipur is not happy with the selection of the top 20 list.
“I withdraw my Best National costume by the people choice category,” he announced.”
Earlier, Naorem had posted a video on Facebook featuring Danube in the national costume, where she was seen wearing a Manipuri Potloi in a voluminous silhouette, symbolising the enduring spirit of womanhood.
The costume’s red hue represented strength and passion, while its elements included the ethereal Shirui Lily, the Nongin bird, and a flowing Inaphee adorned with the majestic Sangai and Meitei Mayek script, embodying Manipur’s resilience and cultural legacy.
Naorem’s withdrawal has sparked discussions on social media, with many from the region sharing his disappointment over the top 20 selections.
On the other hand, three contestants from the Northeast states—Assam, Mizoram, and Nagaland—made it to the top 20 list. Ruopfuzhano Whiso of Nagaland secured the 4th runner-up title in the competition.
