Dimapur: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has distanced itself from comments made by its former president, K Therie, who recently described the consultative meeting on the Naga political issue as “futile and a waste.”
In a statement, the NPCC emphasised the importance of the September 12 meeting, which was convened by the Nagaland Home Department and included tribal organizations, student bodies, and other stakeholders. The NPCC highlighted the necessity of transparency, consensus-building, and inclusivity in the ongoing political dialogue.
While acknowledging that Therie raised valid concerns, the NPCC reiterated the need for constructive engagement. “It is undeniable that these shared concerns make it even more important to embrace processes that promote consensus-building, transparency, and inclusivity,” the party said.
The NPCC also clarified that its decision to participate in the consultative session was guided by these principles. Following the meeting, the party called for the agreements between the Government of India and the Naga political groups to be shared with the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) and civil society to ensure transparency and encourage meaningful contributions.
While the NPCC noted the groundwork laid by previous central governments, it stressed that although not directly involved in the negotiations, it remains ready to contribute when called upon.
The NPCC further urged the Government of India to implement the agreements with Naga political groups at the earliest and emphasised the importance of honoring these commitments. On the call for a new political interlocutor, the NPCC advised against attaching negative connotations to the move, viewing it as an opportunity for enhanced coordination and accountability.
