Kohima: The two-day National Conference on Cybercrime, Digital Forensics & Intelligence 2024, organised by the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), Kohima, in collaboration with Nagaland Police and the Department of Information Technology & Communication, Government of Nagaland, commenced on Thursday at the Capital Convention Centre, Kohima.
The event is supported by the United Service Institution of India.
Guest of honour, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, S. Krishnan, IAS, stressed the importance of cyber hygiene and the need for continuous upgrades to systems, networks, servers, and other digital infrastructures.
He cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks on the need for improved cybersecurity practices among government officials.
He also highlighted the significant role of NIELIT in bridging the digital divide in the country, especially in the Northeast region. Krishnan emphasised the importance of cybersecurity, particularly in the context of India’s geopolitical landscape.
Krishnan also launched the project “Empowering Police Personnel and Government Officials of NE States through IT and Cyber Security Training” during the event.
Advisor for IT&C, Economics, Statistics & Evaluation, Sethrongkyu Sangtam, was the special guest at the inaugural session. He lauded the efforts of NIELIT, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, the Government of Nagaland’s IT and Communication Department, and the Nagaland Police for organising this pivotal event.
In his address, Sangtam highlighted the growing importance of cybersecurity in today’s interconnected world. He pointed out the increasing threats to digital safety, which pose risks to national security, the economy, and public safety. Sangtam emphasized the need for robust defenses against these threats.
He noted the impressive gathering of scholars, industry experts, policymakers, government officials, intelligence personnel, public prosecutors, and members of the judiciary. Sangtam asserted that their collective knowledge and experiences are vital in combating cybercrime and improving national security systems.
Sangtam called for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovative solutions to protect the digital world. He expressed hope that the conference would enhance awareness among police, protectors, and adjudicating officers about combating cybercrime. Sangtam underscored that cybersecurity is not just a technical issue but a national priority. He affirmed the government’s dedication to creating a secure and resilient digital environment through strong cybersecurity practices, research and development, and a skilled workforce.
