Kohima: An indefinite total shutdown was declared in Eastern Nagaland districts on Thursday, a day ahead of the 18th Lok Sabha elections.
The total shutdown, declared under the authority of the Eastern Nagaland Public Emergency, will come to force at 6PM on April 18.
This decision encompasses the entire jurisdiction of Eastern Nagaland areas comprising the districts of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Noklak, and Shamator.
Exemption has been made for government servants on Election Duty with valid ID proof, District Administration personnel, Army, Paramilitary, and State Police forces, individuals requiring medical emergencies, Fire and Emergency Services personnel, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) staff, Postal Services employees.
Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO), Tribal Bodies, Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation (ENWO), Eastern Nagaland Students’ Federation (ENSF), and Eastern Nagaland Public Emergency volunteers also remain exempted.
The ENPO has been unwavering in its stand to boycott the Lok Sabha election in protest against the delay in addressing its demand for Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT).

On Wednesday, the ENPO wrote to the 20 elected members of the Eastern Nagaland Legislators Union (ENLU) to “honour the decision of Eastern Nagaland”.
“By honouring the people’s decision to abstain from participating in the election, ENLU would not only demonstrate solidarity with the aspirations in the citizen of Eastern Nagaland but also reaffirm its commitment to the principles of democracy and popular sovereignty”.
