Guwahati: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has strongly condemned the remarks made by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, during the campaign coordination meeting of the People’s Democratic Alliance on April 7.
In a statement issued by the NPCC, the party condemned CM’s comments as immature and baseless.
The NPCC’s statement highlighted several points of contention, primarily focusing on Rio’s alleged disregard for documented evidence of discriminatory treatment against minorities in India, including the Christian community.
“CM can conveniently turn blind to the reams of data from independent National as well as International Rights Organisations documenting the BJP’s discriminatory treatment against the minorities of India, including the Christian community, but unfortunately untold Indians who are at the receiving end of this injustice can not afford that luxury,” the party said.
“The fact that he continues to be one of the most ardent apologists of the BJP in the face of such evidence backed universal censureship speaks volumes about the weight of his assurance when he states that he’ll never compromise the faith and identity of the Nagas,” it added.
Moreover, the NPCC expressed dismay at the “kind of language” used by CM Rio to “undermine “belittle” the candidature of his opponents. They emphasised the expectation for a higher standard of conduct from someone occupying such a prestigious office.

“With such a long and eventful political profile under his belt, he of all people should know that a weak or strong candidature will be decided on counting day, by the electorate, not by the subjective views of an individual. We respect the will of the voters and have high hope that the people of Nagaland will give a clear and strong mandate in favour of the Congress Party this time around,” the party said.
In addressing accusations of past misuse of Article 356 by Congress governments, the NPCC compared such allegations to traffic offenses when contrasted with the “wholesale and brazen misuse of state apparatus happening at present under the Modi government”.
