Guwahati: In a statement released on Sunday, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has accused the state government of being morally bankrupt, citing the recent filing of an FIR by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against high-ranking officials.
The statement from the NPCC expressed shock and concern over the bribery case involving one Additional Secretary from the Department of Agriculture, GON, and two other officials working in the Fostering Climate-Resilient Upland Farming System (FOCUS) project. The accused officials are under investigation for allegedly accepting bribes exceeding rupees two crore.
The NPCC characterised the incident as “along expected lines,” highlighting the pervasive corruption that, according to them, has a stranglehold on all levels of governance in the state. The opposition party described the government as “morally bankrupt” and emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the deep-rooted corruption within the administration.
“While we laud the welcome intervention of the law enforcement agency in the case, it is nowhere near enough,” the statement read. The NPCC contends that the bribery case is merely the tip of the iceberg, revealing a much larger, systemic issue that has been eating away at the rights and well-being of the common people of Nagaland over time.
The NPCC called for a comprehensive investigation, describing the corruption as “systemic, entrenched, and starting at the top.” They argue that the current efforts to address corruption are insufficient and that a more extensive troubleshooting exercise is necessary to root out the deep-seated problem.
In a stern warning, the NPCC condemned what they described as the “vulgar fallout of corruption” and urged those in power to mend their ways. They expressed concern that the prevailing culture of decadence and ineptitude, as allegedly endorsed by the government, could lead the state to a point of no return.
