Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio emphasised the need for collective action from government bodies, educators, parents, and stakeholders to drive transformative change in the state’s education sector.
Speaking at the inauguration of the upgradation of Government Middle School Meriema to High School on Thursday, Rio highlighted the historical significance of the institution, which has been serving the community since 1927.
Acknowledging the proactive role of village leaders in promoting education, Rio praised their efforts in establishing schools, which have significantly contributed to the educational landscape of Nagaland. He noted a substantial increase in student enrollment, with over 290 students currently enrolled, reflecting a growing interest in education among the populace.
Rio underscored the importance of addressing challenges such as infrastructure development and staffing shortages through a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders. He urged for a departure from political appointments in favor of meritocracy in recruitment processes, emphasising the government’s commitment to ensuring quality education for all.
Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Advisor for School Education and SCERT, echoed Rio’s sentiments, emphasizing the rich heritage of the newly upgraded school and the broader need to uplift government schools to meet the expectations of the people. Yhome highlighted the economic strain faced by many families in sending their children to private schools, underscoring the imperative to enhance the standards of government schools.
During the event, various cultural performances and martial arts displays showcased the vibrant spirit of the Meriema community. The program, chaired by Meriema Village Council Chairman Keduolhoulie Huozha, also featured presentations by school officials and expressions of gratitude from community representatives.
