Kohima: The 19th Annual Conference of the Association of Oncologists, Northeast India (AONEI) commenced in Kohima on Friday, marking the gathering of health experts, researchers, and professionals from various departments dedicated to advancing the field of oncology.
MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhütso, the special guest during the inaugural ceremony, highlighted the collective commitment of the community towards addressing the challenges posed by cancer.
Dr Rhütso acknowledged the diverse assembly of esteemed researchers and healthcare professionals, emphasising their common goal of working towards innovative solutions in oncology. He noted the ever-evolving landscape of oncology marked by groundbreaking research, technological advancements, and an unwavering dedication to improving the lives of those affected by cancer.
The significance of hosting the conference in Nagaland, particularly in Kohima, was underscored by Dr Rhütso as cancer poses a common burden to both patients and caregivers in Naga society. Nagaland is ranked 11th in cancer incidence in India and has the second-highest incidence of Nasopharynx cancer globally. The lack of adequate treatment facilities in this region adds to the severity of the situation.
Dr Rhütso, sharing his experiences as a representative and surgeon, highlighted the dual responsibility of ensuring world-class infrastructural facilities as a public servant and providing the best services through technical capabilities and knowledge.
The theme of the oncology conference, “Expanding Horizons: What’s Known and What’s New,” was deemed apt for the current scenario. Dr Rhütso expressed hope that the conference would encourage collaboration, foster an environment for the exchange of ideas, and facilitate partnerships.

The inaugural address was delivered by the guest of honor, V Kezo, Commissioner & Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department. During the program, AONEI felicitated Ramon Magsaysay Award 2023 recipient Padma Shri Dr. Ravi Kannan. Dr. CS Pramesh, Director of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, presented a paper on ‘Reducing Disparities in Cancer Care.’ AONEI Secretary Dr. Abhijit Talukdar presented the AONEI secretary report, and the keynote address was given by AONEI President Dr. Jagunath Buragohain.
The inaugural also featured the release of the AONEI 2024 Conference Souvenir Magazine by the special guest and the AONEI and AONEI 2024 Conference Souvenir Magazine by the guest of honor.
