Aizawl: The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) and Chief Minister Lalduhoma have strongly condemned the killing of three Kuki church leaders who were shot dead in an ambush in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Wednesday.
The three deceased pastors were identified as Rev. Dr. Vumthang Sitlhou, Rev. Kaigoulun Lhouvum, and Rev. Paogoulen Sitlhou, all associated with the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA).
According to reports, the church leaders were travelling in two vehicles from Churachandpur to Kangpokpi after attending a TBA conference in Lamka when unidentified armed men ambushed them between Kotzim and Kotlen villages in Kangpokpi district.
At least five others were also injured in the attack and are currently undergoing treatment. The injured include Rev. SM Haopu, Rev. Hekai Simte, Rev. Paothang, and two drivers identified as Lelen and Goumang.
The incident reportedly triggered fresh tension in the area, with an immediate blockade imposed along National Highway-2 following the attack.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the opposition Mizo National Front expressed deep sorrow over the killings and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families.
The party said it was deeply pained by the incident and called for those responsible for the attack to be identified and punished according to the law.
The MNF stated that the incident was especially disturbing at a time when the situation in Manipur had begun showing signs of improvement after prolonged ethnic tensions and violence.
The party also said it was difficult to comprehend that religious leaders and servants of God had become targets of such violence.
Expressing concern over the incident, the MNF wished speedy recovery to those injured in the ambush and reiterated its hope for lasting peace among Zo communities and between different ethnic groups in Manipur.
