Aizawl: The opposition Congress in Mizoram has raised objections to the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) for announcing its candidate for the upcoming Dampa assembly bypoll, with the Election Commission yet to declare the poll date.
On Monday, the ZPM declared Vanlalsailova, a well-known Mizo singer and public figure, as its candidate for the Dampa seat, which became vacant following the passing of MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21.
In a statement, the Congress said that traditionally, political parties in Mizoram have refrained from announcing candidates for bypolls arising due to the death of a sitting MLA until after the Election Commission sets the date, out of respect for the deceased. The party criticized ZPM for breaking with this custom.
ZPM president Lalliansawta officially introduced Vanlalsailova as the party’s nominee during a function held in Aizawl, urging party workers to unite and prepare for the forthcoming election.
Vanlalsailova had also contested in the last assembly election in November 2023, where he was defeated by the late Lalrintluanga Sailo.
Born on April 25, 1979, in West Phaileng, Vanlalsailova grew up in a modest household and rose to fame in the early 2000s as a beloved music icon among Mizo youth. Known for his signature red T-shirts, spiked hair, and energetic dance moves, he became a trendsetter and household name. He maintains a large following across platforms like YouTube and social media.
Though he initially gained fame through romantic ballads, Vanlalsailova later transitioned into gospel music and public speaking, gaining respect in spiritual circles. He released his debut album on November 7, 2002.
