Aizawl: In response to the deteriorating condition of the Kawnpui–Sairang stretch of National Highway 6 (NH-6), senior officials from the Mizoram Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) held a meeting yesterday at the Secretariat Conference Hall, MINECO. The meeting also included the participation of the Additional Superintendent of Police, Kolasib District.
The meeting was chaired by K. Lalthawmmawia, Commissioner & Secretary, PWD, who conveyed that the Chief Minister had called for this gathering in light of public concern over the worsening road conditions. He stated that the road built by NHIDCL between Kawnpui and Sairang has deteriorated due to poor execution and lack of proper follow-up maintenance. The situation has become so severe that daily commuters and transporters are suffering, especially due to impassable stretches during rains, mudslides, and traffic blockages.
The meeting was chaired by K. Lalthawmmawia, Commissioner and Secretary of PWD, who stated that the emergency meeting was convened at the direction of the Chief Minister. He noted that the current condition of the Kawnpui to Sairang (NH-6) stretch is a result of NHIDCL’s failure to properly execute and maintain the construction work. Given the impact on the movement of essential goods, oil tankers, and daily supplies, he stressed the urgent need to expedite repair efforts, as the public is suffering as a result. He further stated that the Mizoram PWD is prepared to assist NHIDCL in the repair process, and has already allocated ₹1 crore (₹100 lakh) for this purpose.
Speaking at the meeting, the Engineer-in-Chief, PWD, reiterated the department’s readiness to cooperate with NHIDCL to ensure the road is restored as quickly as possible.
A representative from NHIDCL headquarters in New Delhi, the Technical Director, highlighted that proper traffic management is essential for carrying out road repair efficiently. He stressed that if full logistical support and coordination are ensured, the work could be completed within 10 days. He also mentioned that the Director (Technical) of NHIDCL would be arriving in Mizoram shortly to assess the ground situation firsthand and expedite the restoration process.
To oversee the repair work and ensure effective coordination, it was decided during the meeting that a Joint Operation Group will be formed under the leadership of the Deputy Commissioner of Kolasib District. The group will include senior engineers and police officials such as the Chief Engineer (Highways), Superintending Engineer (NHC-I), Superintendent of Police (Kolasib), Senior Executive Engineers from PWD (NHD-III and Kolasib Division), the Officer-in-Charge of Sairang Police Station, and officials from NHIDCL and the Project Monitoring Unit (PMU), Kolasib.
The chairman of the meeting concluded that given the urgency and importance of restoring this critical highway link, the Joint Operation Group must immediately chart out the execution plan and act with full commitment to ensure visible progress within the shortest timeframe possible.
The Kawnpui–Sairang stretch of NH-6 remains a key arterial route for Mizoram, and its current condition has become a major public concern, affecting transportation, trade, and access to essential services.
