Aizawl: The Guwahati High Court Aizawl Bench has admitted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Mizoram Truck Drivers Association (MTDA), highlighting the poor condition of national highways between Kawnpui and Sairang, a vital stretch for the state’s connectivity and supplies.
The petition points to the worsening state of National Highways 306 and 06, especially during the monsoon season, which has long been a cause of concern among drivers, transporters, and the general public. The road segments in question lie between the 72-95 km mark on NH-306 and the 118-133 km mark on NH-06.
MTDA, in its plea, emphasized that this highway serves as Mizoram’s lifeline, the primary route for transporting essential goods, including petroleum products. Due to frequent landslides and potholes, many vehicles have been damaged or overturned, disrupting supply chains and often leading to shortages of fuel and other essentials in the state.
The association argued that despite repeated repairs, the quality of roadwork has remained subpar and dangerously slow. The High Court has accepted the PIL for further deliberation.
Meanwhile, public concern over the state’s road infrastructure has also triggered a coordinated civil society response. On July 8, four prominent civil society organizations — Mizoram Transformation Movement (MTM), Centre for Environment and Social Justice (CESJ), Mizoram First (MF), and Citizen Alliance for Truth and Social Justice (CATAJ) — came together to form the Joint Civil Society of Mizoram (JCM).
JCM has prioritized the Vairengte to Sairang stretch of NH-306 and NH-306A, urging the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to accelerate repair works before the full impact of the monsoon is felt. The group also raised environmental concerns, advocating for an older road alignment in Packages 7 and 8 to preserve forests and protect water sources near Sairang.
