Aizawl: In preparation for a preliminary border survey between Mizoram’s Hnahthial District and Myanmar, Hnahthial Deputy Commissioner K. Vanlalruati chaired a high-level coordination meeting on Tuesday involving officials from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Assam Rifles, and the Superintendent of Police (SP) Office.
The meeting was called to discuss arrangements for conducting a joint preliminary survey along the India–Myanmar border, particularly in light of potential fencing plans. The Deputy Commissioner stressed the importance of clearly understanding the terrain, boundary alignment, and settlement patterns before any physical fencing or infrastructure projects are initiated.
Speaking at the meeting, K. Vanlalruati stated that since fencing along the international border may be carried out in the future, it is essential to conduct an accurate and well-coordinated survey to establish the precise demarcation of the border and assess ground realities.
She also pointed out that Thingsai, located in Hnahthial District, is currently the only recognised entry-exit point among the 14 such points identified along the Mizoram–Myanmar border. This makes it a key location for initial survey activities.
The upcoming survey at Thingsai is being planned as a joint effort, involving personnel from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Superintendent of Police, BRO, and Assam Rifles. The survey will assess the feasibility of fencing and gather inputs from local residents to understand public sentiment regarding the border infrastructure.
According to officials, once the preliminary survey is complete, the Border Roads Organisation will take the lead in conducting a more detailed land survey, extending the effort to other potential crossing points between Hnahthial District and Myanmar.
