Aizawl: In a bid to promote environmental sustainability, Mizoram is gearing up for an eco-friendly election as the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) reiterated the commitment to minimise ecological impact.
CEO Madhup Vyas addressed the media at the I&PR Auditorium on Saturday and urged political entities to abstain from the use of single-use plastics during the electoral process.
The CEO informed that the Mizoram Parliamentary Constituency is earmarked for phase 1 of the general elections. The electoral process will kick off with the issuance of the gazette notification on March 20.
Nomination filings will be accepted until March 27, followed by the scrutiny of nominations on March 28. Candidates will have until March 30 to withdraw their candidatures. The polling day is scheduled for April 19, with counting slated for June 4. The entire electoral process is anticipated to conclude by June 6.
Vyas underlined the importance of voter participation and urged all eligible voters to exercise their democratic rights. He also appealed to the media to play a proactive role in disseminating vital information regarding the election process.
The final electoral roll, published on February 8 showcased that Mizoram boasts a total of 8,61,277 electors. This constituency comprises 4,14,777 male electors, 4,41,520 female electors, and 4,980 service voters.
Notably, Aizawl District recorded the highest number of electors (2,88,268), while Hnahthial District reported the lowest figure (16,257). Additionally, demographic details such as the presence of 36,214 youth voters (18-19 years old), 4,758 senior citizen voters (85 years and above), and 3,399 Persons with Disability (PwD) voters were highlighted.
Mizoram is set to witness 1,276 polling stations, marking an increase of 101 from the 2019 Lok Sabha General Elections. Each polling station will be equipped with Assured Minimum Facilities (AMF), with special provisions for women and PwD-managed stations.
Model Polling Stations will be established, and webcasting will be enabled in critical areas. Furthermore, postal ballot/home voting options will be extended to PwD and senior citizen voters.
To ensure the smooth conduct of the elections, law enforcement efforts will be bolstered with the deployment of 3000 State Police officers and 15 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). Vigilance teams will be tasked with rigorously monitoring election expenditure, aiming to combat the influence of drugs and alcohol.
A State Level Media Cell and Media Certification and Monitoring Committees (MCMC) will be constituted. He informed that election officials have undergone extensive training, focusing on implementing the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEEP) initiative to enhance voter awareness.

The latest Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) technology (M3 model) will be adopted. Additionally, provisions for emergency medical services via air ambulance will be put in place to address any unforeseen medical emergencies during the electoral process.
The CEO hoped that all political parties and candidates will strictly adhere to the Model Code of Conduct, which comes into effect from the announcement of the general elections.
