Aizawl: A dispute has arisen between the NIA (National Investigation Agency) and the Mizoram Police regarding the claims of dismantling of a cross-border arms smuggling network.
The NIA claims to have arrested Lalngaihawma, a key suspect involved in a large-scale illegal arms and ammunition supply network operating in northeastern states, as part of an investigation initiated on December 26, 2023. The arrest was made under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Explosive Substances Act, and Arms Act.
However, Mizoram Police disputes the NIA’s assertion, contending that Lalngaihawma is a member of the police force, specifically associated with the CID’s special branch. The state police argue that there is no evidence of his involvement in arms smuggling, emphasising that the suspicion was based on telephonic recordings. Mizoram Police further revealed that no weapons were seized from Lalngaihawma, who belongs to the CID (SB) unit.
Attempts were made to seek clarification from the Home Department officials, but they claimed to be unaware of such activities. Despite efforts to contact DIG CID Lalhuliana and other police officials, they remained unresponsive. This story will be updated as and when we receive a response on the same.
According to a Times of India report, Mizoram Police raised concerns over the NIA’s actions, indicating that they seized the cellphone of a police intelligence official of DSP-rank based on suspicion.

Allegations have surfaced that the Ministry of Home Affairs is under pressure from Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh. Singh previously alleged that a significant quantity of arms and ammunition was dispatched from Mizoram to aid village defense forces in Manipur.
