Shillong: Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam Sangma has called out the Voice of the People Party (VPP) for opposing rock concerts and musical events in Shillong.
His comments come in the wake of the VPP’s objections to the Bryan Adams concert, which they criticized as a mere “painkiller” for the struggles faced by the people under the MDA Government.
Sangma highlighted the irony of many opponents attending the concert and singing along to Bryan Adams’ iconic hits. He argued that events of such scale bring significant global recognition to Shillong.
“The world now knows that Bryan Adams performed in Shillong,” Sangma said, emphasizing the positive exposure the city gained from hosting the international star.
He also questioned whether the VPP, if in power, would extend their objections to celebrated local acts like the Shillong Chamber Choir.
According to Sangma, such events not only promote the state’s image but also inspire the youth of Meghalaya to aim for global artistic excellence.
The concert has sparked a broader debate on the balance between cultural expression and addressing the challenges faced by the people of the state.
