Guwahati: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, under the Ministry of Education, has released its latest rankings, assessing 10,845 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across India.
Among the Northeast states, while the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) achieved a remarkable 9th position in the overall category, most state colleges and universities from the northeastern region struggled to secure top positions, with none making it to the top 50 in the overall rankings.
Gauhati University, Assam, was the highest-ranked state institution in the overall category, placed at 57th. The National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) also featured in the top 100, securing the 92nd position. However, when considering the university category specifically, some institutions fared better. Gauhati University was ranked 40th, Tezpur University, Assam, secured the 69th position, and Mizoram University, Aizawl, was placed at 77th.
According to a report by Hubnews, despite these rankings, the performance of many northeastern HEIs reflects ongoing challenges. For instance, the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) issued a press statement expressing “extreme happiness” over being ranked among the top 200 universities in the country. USTM, a private institution established in 2011, was placed in the 150 to 200 rank band in the ‘University’ category. In comparison, the Shillong-based North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), a central university established in 1973, was positioned in the 101 to 150 rank band in the same category.
Other institutions from the region, such as Assam University and Dibrugarh University, were placed in the 101 to 150 rank band, while Manipur University joined NEHU in the 151 to 200 rank band in the overall category.
