Shillong: As preparations intensify for the prestigious Durand Cup 2024, a crucial coordination meeting was convened on Thursday between the Meghalaya Sports Department and army officials to discuss logistical arrangements.
The meeting addressed recent challenges posed by Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) checks on work permits at JN Stadium, which temporarily unsettled construction workers. However, the state government successfully persuaded the workers to continue their efforts.
Addressing the media, Dr. Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner and Secretary of Sports & Youth Affairs, expressed optimism that these incidents would not further delay preparations. He emphasized the critical nature of the next 10 days to finalize remaining tasks.
Shillong is set to host six matches, with the opening match of the Durand Cup scheduled for August 2, coinciding with the reopening ceremony of JN Stadium after its extensive renovation. Dr. Vijay Kumar highlighted that 95% of the renovation work is completed, including seating enhancements and the installation of natural turf to meet international standards.
“We are making JN stadium into a more competitive and with natural turf to host international style matches. So, a whole revamping of JN stadium is also going on. we’re very happy from the sports department and the state government that we are using the Durand to reopen the JN stadium,” mentioned Kumar.
The tournament will feature four teams: local favorites Shillong Lajong, Hyderabad FC, Goa FC, and an international team from Nepal. The Sports Department is closely monitoring stadium progress and collaborating with event managers to ensure seamless logistics.
Regarding ticketing and crowd management, Kumar announced ticket sales would commence tomorrow, with prices ranging from ₹100 to ₹500. “We are assessing the financial implications, expected to be substantial, but anticipate cost recovery through ticket sales,” he added.
Kumar informed that arrangements are made to address traffic challenges as they are coordinating with the police to ensure smooth event operations.
Accommodation for teams will be provided at Shillong’s two five-star hotels, with transportation arrangements facilitated to and from NEHU campus for practices.

With over 20,000 spectators expected, local businesses are expected to benefit from economic opportunities like food stalls.
“In finances, we are still working out. But requirements are being assessed. So, as we move along, I think only when we get closer to the event, we will know the finances, but it will definitely be in a few crores because hosting any big event will cost that kind of money. We also hope some recovery of costs through ticket sales and all,” added Dr Vijay Kumar.
