Shillong: The North Garo Hills Job Reservation Policy Coordination Committee, joining other groups and civil societies from Garo Hills, has appealed to the Expert Committee to maintain the status quo on the existing quota policy in Meghalaya.
In recommendations submitted to L K Diengdoh, Secretary of the Expert Committee, the Coordination Committee suggested maintaining the current provisions to ensure benefits to the Garo community remain intact.
The committee emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of socio-economic data and empirical evidence to assess the ongoing necessity of the reservation policy. It urged the Expert Committee to refrain from making changes that could potentially harm the Garo community, citing concerns about legal challenges.

“Changes that reduce the benefits currently available to the Garo community may be seen as discriminatory and unconstitutional. Any deviation from these principles could be subject to legal scrutiny and challenge,” it warned.
Furthermore, the Coordination Committee requested the Expert Committee to engage in consultations with representatives from Garo Hills through ground visits to all district headquarters. This, they argued, would allow for a better understanding of local concerns and perspectives before finalising any recommendations.
